[Editor's note: Peachtree

City mayoral candidate Steve Brown received an invitation from Mayor Bob

Lenox to serve on a voluntary committee. This is Brown's reply.]

Dear Mayor Lenox:

On Aug. 20, I received your

request on behalf of the City Council for participation on a citizen committee

responsible for educating the public on the five referendum proposals.

I thank you for considering me for the committee.

In fairness, I must tell you

that I have some reservations regarding some of the proposals. I may not

be able to commit to an open endorsement for all of the referendum projects.

I can, however, willingly support some of the items within the referendum.

I also will promise to maintain an open mind regarding all of the projects

and to listen in an unbiased manner throughout the committee discussions.

I do not believe that opposing

viewpoints about the referendum projects will hinder the committee's ability

to educate the public. In fact, I feel that educating the citizens of

Peachtree City will be more effective if both sides of these issues are

represented.

If I am elected in November,

I will be accountable for the financial standing of the city as a whole.

Obviously, there are some vital projects looming in future years and the

economy is falling off at a rapid pace, possibly affecting future tax

revenues.

I believe that it is wise to

view all new expenditures with a keen eye geared toward the future financial

condition of the city and to not take any unnecessary risks in the midst

of a declining economy.

If I am still welcome despite

my reluctance to provide blanket support and endorsement, I will gladly

serve and I will be attendance at the Aug. 27 meeting.

Steve Brown

Peachtree City

[Brown is an announced candidate

for mayor of Peachtree City. The Citizen welcomes letters from candidates

for all local offices and from citizens commenting on the candidates and

issues raised. We will print the letters from candidates and a representative

sampling of others subject to standard editing practices for length and

conformity to libel laws, until the week before the election.]
