Happy Fourth
of July. Today, you should have the day off.
Perhaps you
are wondering how to spend your time and celebrate this holiday. There
are many events going on locally today, including picnics, parades and
fireworks.
Peachtree City
starts the day with the Fourth of July Parade, which begins at 9 a.m.
at Booth Middle School. At 3 p.m., the Fire Department will present its
annual demonstration at Drake Field. Firefighters will demonstrate how
the jaws of life are used and show off their ladder rescue trucks before
concluding the event with a water battle at 4 p.m.
The celebration
continues when the Peachtree Wind Ensemble community band performs at
City Hall Plaza at 7:30 p.m. and the fireworks begin at 9 p.m.
There will
be no public parking at the Wyndham Conference Center, City Hall or Picnic
Park and no parking will be permitted along Ga. Highway 54. Parking will
also be limited to one side of Battery Way during the fireworks.
There's a new
Fourth of July celebration and picnic this year, sponsored by the Kiwanis
Club of Fayette County. The fun lasts from noon to 7 p.m at the Kiwanis
Fairgrounds on Goza Road. There will be food, games such as wheelbarrow
races, three legged races, sack races and an egg toss, an antique car
show, a flea market and performances from The Servers, Amber Tucker and
Daddy's Money, and The Robert Barnes Band.
The Servers
is a bluegrass gospel band that has been together for eight years. The
group has played at many churches and bluegrass festivals and is currently
working on its first CD. Amber Tucker is an up and coming singer who has
been performing at Shadows in Peachtree City with her father, Darwin Conort.
They will play an assortment of country covers and will be joined at the
picnic by Larry Ivy on drums and Chris England on bass. The Robert Barnes
Band is a Christian rock group that recently released a CD called "Elevator
Music."
If you would
like to head into Atlanta for festivities, go to the Salute 2 America
Parade, 1-2:30 p.m. beginning at Centennial Olympic Park. Games, activities
and concerts follow. The Chapel Choir and Orchestra from Dallas, Texas
will perform and two Thunder Roadsters and the pace car from Atlanta Motor
Speedway will be in attendance. There will be street performers and a
"Paint A Mural" activity for kis of all ages.
The Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m., playing a wide-ranging selection
of classical music, including the "William Tell Overture," "The
Star Wars Suite," the "1812 Overture" and Aaron Copland's
"Lincoln Portrait." The fireworks will follow the concert and
begin at 9 p.m.
If you really
want to travel on the Fourth, Unicoi State Park will celebrate Independence
Day mountain style. There will be field day activities and relays in front
of the beach house from 1-4:30 p.m. There will be an old fashioned mountain
hoe down at 8 p.m. at the Trading Post. Phone 706-878-3983.
However you
decide to celebrate Independence Day, have a happy and safe holiday.
