Fayette residents
may find it more convenient to get a driver's license in the future.
County commissioners
Thursday voted to fund a $43,900 remodeling project to provide new office
space for driver's license examiners in a house the county owns on McDonough
Road at County Line Road.
The examiners
currently are housed at the County Administrative Complex at Ga. highways
85 and 54 in downtown Fayetteville, where a space crunch is beginning
to develop, officials say.
Moving the
examiners out of the complex will allow the Georgia State Patrol to provide
examinations five days a week instead of the current one day, said commission
Chairman Greg Dunn.
That doesn't
mean the patrol will do so, but State Patrol and state Department of Motor
Vehicle officials have indicated a desire to increase the number of days
to at least two or three, said County Administrator Chris Cofty.
It will be
easier to get in and out of the new facility, said county finance director
Mark Pullium. "We do have a lot of traffic here, especially on Thursdays
when the driver's license office is open," he said.
The project
also will provide office space for Children at Risk and the Fayette Factor,
freeing up still more space at the county complex, and the county coroner
also will gain an office in the bargain.
