"The planting is part
of a program designed for Kiwanis clubs statewide to enhance their communities
environmentally while cultivating a sense of historical recognition,"
according to Dennis Davenport, the Fayette club's president.
The tulip poplar tree planted
at Hollingsworth is grown from seed collected from one of the tulip poplars
planted by George Washington more than 200 years ago that are still growing
at Mount Vernon, Washington's home in Virginia. Andy's Nursery and Landscape
donated the seedling to the club.
The Hollingsworth House was
originally built in 1906 as a wedding present for Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth
house, which was relocated to its present location in 1998.
The house is currently owned
and operated by the Downtown Development Authority of Fayetteville and
is part of the city's Main Street District. It is available for rental
for special events.
The Metro Fayette Kiwanis Club
meets every Thursday at noon at the IHOP in Fayetteville. For information
about the club, visit its Web site at mfk.go.coolbiz.com .
