One thing that
won't be weighing on the mind of the catcher for Sandy Creek's baseball
team next spring is where he'll be going to college.
Rusty Bennett,
a hard-hitting member of the Patriots varsity baseball team, signed a
letter of intent to attend and play baseball for Georgia State University
early Wednesday morning.
"I like
the coaches and it is a good school," Bennett explained. "Plus,
it's close to home and my folks can come and watch me play."
If his output
stays the same, there should be a lot to watch. Bennett has lettered all
three years that he has played varsity for Sandy Creek. He has also been
named to the All-County team the last two years.
Bennett had
something of a breakout season last year. He hit .485 with seven home
runs and was named to the All- Southside team as well as a Student Athlete
of the Week.
"Rusty
displays good leadership and a good attitude," said head coach Eddie
Householder. "He's an excellent hitter and a great competitor. He
should do very well at Georgia State."
Both the coach
and the player are glad this momentous decsion is out of the way. "With
the signing out of the way, Rusty can now concentrate on the season,"
Householder said. "This will be a very competitive season with the
majority of the games being region games. Every game will count."
Bennett agrees. "I have a good ability to handle pressure and with
the signing out of the way, I can play ball and have fun."
Sandy Creek
will open its season with the Fayette County Classic in early March.
