Ask any
East Coweta football player and he will tell you that he
remembers last year's game with the Houston County Bears.
Despite
being heavily favored, the Indians lost to the Bears in a
heartbreaker. You will be able to ask the very same
question to the Indians next year, as they suffered
another loss in a very close contest with the Houston
County Bears.
The Indians
came out energized but could not stretch their drives
out. Both teams were forced to punt several times and
nothing appeared to be working offensively for either
team. Houston County got its offense going first and put
two touchdowns on the scoreboard before the half. The
first touchdown came off a turnover and the second
followed shortly after that. Trailing 14-0, East Coweta's
back was against the wall.
Everything
changed in the third quarter. The Indians' defense went
wild, stopping what appeared to be every Houston County
player behind the line. The Indians scored a touchdown
early in the third after big catches by Marcus Robinson
and Derrick Holoway. Their second touchdown came moments
later after thwarting Houston County in their end of the
field. W.J. Jordan ran 61 yards for the touchdown.
With a tie
ball game and all the momentum, it appeared as if things
would be different this year. They weren't.
Houston
County may have reaped the benefits of a questionable
call but their next drive survived and ended in a field
goal, giving the Bears a 17-14 lead. East Coweta tried to
surge back once more, but their luck and time ran out.
They only possessed the ball once in the fourth quarter
and a pass by Reamer Argo was intercepted.
The Indians
had a good season. They finished second in Region 4-AAAA,
beat their rivals the Newnan Cougars, and won eight games
in a row. Those achievements do not take the sting out of
losing in the first round, though. They will have to wait
for their chance next year to do that.
