Tennant,
who ran as a write-in candidate in the 1995 Post 2
election and narrowly lost, has lived in Peachtree City
with his wife, Kristine, a Fayette County teacher, and
two young sons for more than five years. He and his
family moved from northern Virginia to Peachtree City in
1994.
"So
many people respected my decision to run in 1995, despite
the overwhelming odds, and they have urged me to run this
year," said Tennant. "After giving it a lot of
thought and having consulted with many friends and
associates, I am pleased to announce that I intend to
seek the Post 2 council position this fall."
Tennant,
42, graduated from California State University in 1980
with a B.S. in business administration and is national
key accounts manager for Matthews International
Corporation, based in Pittsburgh, Pa. He has been
involved in numerous community activities, including
youth sports, the YMCA, Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis, and the
Peachtree City United Methodist Church, including the
church's Promise Keepers, Habitat for Humanity, and
United Methodist Men groups.
An avid
golfer, Tennant is well know for organizing one of the
largest annual charity golf tournaments in Georgia, the
Joe Tennant Memorial Classic, each spring at Flat Creek
Club in Peachtree City.
"I
believe firmly in the idea of ordinary citizens with no
special interests serving their community in public
office, and I eagerly await the challenges that lie ahead
as the city approaches build-out," said Tennant.
"I believe my comprehensive business management
background, as well as my enthusiasm, family values,
community involvement and moral character will serve me
well in representing the citizens of Peachtree City in a
fair and even-handed manner."
Tennant is
a registered Republican and declares his political
beliefs are conservative in general. In a letter sent to
many citizens earlier in July to determine if his
candidacy was indeed warranted, Tennant stated that he
believes in an honest, open, responsive and fiscally
responsible government that is run efficiently and in the
best interests of the community as a whole. He believes
in strong and well equipped police and fire departments,
the need to enhance services and programs to the city's
youth, an expansion of community, and modest growth
balanced with the preservation of the Peachtree City
life-style.
"I
believe in honesty and integrity above all else,"
said Tennant. "I'm not part of the political
establishment, and I have no prejudices, special
interests, pre-conceived ideas or hidden agenda. I bring
to the table new blood and vitality with an unbiased and
fair commitment to protect the best interests of
Peachtree City families."
Tennant
said he is in the process of organizing a campaign
committee, and expects to name a campaign manager soon.
"I feel blessed to live in Peachtree City with my
family, and I look forward to answering the call to serve
my community on city council."
The
election will be Tuesday, Nov. 2.
