The
Southside Seals Masters Swim Team won a team record of 12
medals at last week's Georgia Games. Four Seals swimmers,
Steve McDonald, Kato Eiji, Steve Justice and Ken Sharpe,
combined for the seven gold, three silver and two bronze
medals.
The Seals
were dominating in the Men's 40-44 age group. They won
one out of every four medals and won five of the 14
events outright. Steve McDonald captured the bronze
medals in the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke in his first
Georgia Games ever. It was also the first time at the
Georgia Games for Kato Eiji. Eiji won all three silver
medals by placing second in 50, 100, and 200 meter
freestyle events.
Steve
Justice, an old hand when it comes to the Georgia games,
won five more gold medals to add to his collection.
Justice won the 50, 100, and 200 backstroke as well as
the 100 meter breaststroke and the 200 meter freestyle.
Ken Sharpe swam in the 45-49 age group and captured two
gold medals in both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle.
Three of
the Southside Seals have qualified for the USMS National
Long Course Championships. Eiji and Sharpe achieved
national time standards in the 50 meter freestyle, while
Justice qualified in the 50 and 100 meter freestyles as
well as the 50 meter backstroke.
The Seals
are planning on hosting their end of the summer masters
swim meet at the Kedron Aquatic Center on Aug. 28 at 9
a.m. The Seals are a member club of United States Masters
Swimming and is open to all adults over the age of 19.
