Opening
Friday
- The Blair Witch Project - A
very wel-done and scary movie, without all that gore,
splatter and nudity that has plagued the horror genre for
years. Rated R.
- Deep Blue Sea - Think Jurassic
Shark. A cure for Alzheimer's lies with sharks, but these
sharks have had their intelligence enhanced. A smart
shark is a dangerous one. Rated PG-13.
- Runaway Bride - Julia Roberts
and Richard Gere are reunited, only this time she is
making more than he is for making the film. Rated PG-13.
Now
Playing
- American Pie - Certainly not
worth all the hype but not as raunchy as they make it
sound like it is. Some parts are gross but there is a
sweetness and innocence to the tale. It is entertaining.
Rated R.
- Arlington Road - Jeff Bridges
plays an expert on terrorism and Tim Robbins plays his
terroristic neighbor. My mom loved it. She said she was
on the edge of her seat through the whole film. Rated R.
- Austin Powers 2 :
The Spy Who Shagged Me - Hysterically funny with
bigger laughs than the first. It can be a little bawdy so
don't just drop the kids at the film. Rated PG-13.
- Big Daddy - A funny movie and
very cute. It is in the same vein as The Wedding Singer,
having less to do with the likes of Happy Gilmore. I
liked it though. Rated PG-13.
-
Drop Dead Gorgeous
- A comedy about a beauty pageant in middle America.
Kirstie Alley and Denise Richards star. Rated PG-13.
- Eyes Wide Shut - Tom Cruise and
Nicole Kidman star in Stanley Kubrick's final movie.
Secrecy surrounds much of the plot but Kubrick always was
a perfectionist. Rated R.
- The General's Daughter - John
Travolta plays an investigator looking into the murder of
...the general's daughter. Lots of suspense and drama, I
just hope he sings Greased Lightning. Rated R.
- The Haunting - This remake
boasts new effects and a talented cast. Some houses are
born bad and this one is accessible for the whole family.
Rated PG-13.
- Inspector Gadget - One of
America's favorite cartoon detectives gets a live action
movie. Matthew Broderick stars as the bumblingly
brilliant Gadget. Rated PG.
- Lake Placid - Much like the
film, Anaconda, this movie focuses on the terror of a
giant crocodile in a lake in Maine. The previews look
pretty good. Just don't go in expecting Gandhi and you'll
be o.k. Rated R.
- Muppets From Space - So very,
very funny. If you want to know what's wrong with society
today, it's that not enough parents introduce their kids
to the Muppets. Go and enjoy yourself. Rated PG.
- Notting Hill - Julia Roberts
plays a world famous actress and Hugh Grant plays the
charming owner of a charming bookstore. This is the date
movie right now. Rated PG-13.
- South Park: Bigger, Longer, and
Uncut - Do not take the children! This is really
sharp and funny but also very raunchy. I've seen it three
times and it gets better and better. Rated R.
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
- So, it's not the second coming. This is a great
movie with effects that mess with your mind long after.
It is a perfect beginning to the story and the
performances are great. Rated PG.
- Summer of Sam - This movie has
elements of all of Spike Lee's films but not the heart of
one of them. The acting is strong but the film is way too
long. Stay away. Rated R.
- Tarzan - Disney didn't make a
lot of noise about this movie, but it makes as big a
splash as the best of them. It has a good story, nice
songs, and incredible visuals. Rated G.
- Wild, Wild West - A critical
flop, this underachieving film was a hit with the masses,
at least for one week. Rated PG-13.
- The Wood - A comedy/drama about
four young men growing up in The Wood. I haven't heard
much either way. Rated R.
Also
Playing
- Black Mask - Jet Li, the bad
guy in Lethal Weapon IV, plays a masked hero in this Hong
Kong action film. Ends Thursday. Rated R.
- Doug's First Movie
- The hit cartoon takes to the big screen and
entertains and educates his way through 90 minutes. The
voices have changed recently, but it still has a great
sense of humor. Rated G.
- Entrapment - Sean Connery is a
burglar and Catherine Zeta Jones is a cop. What do you
think will happen? Rated PG-13.
- Election - A great movie about
politics that doesn't take sides. Set in high school and
starring Reese Witherspoon, this film is worth your time.
Rated R.
- Forces of Nature - A man finds
true love away from his fiance'. Ben Affleck and Sandra
Bullock star. Rated PG-13.
- Instinct -
Anthony Hopkins plays a crazed sociologist, who murdered
two men in Africa. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the ambitious
young doctor who wants to crack the crazy. Rated R.
-
Life - Eddie
Murphy and Martin Lawrence are wrongly imprisoned for
Life. It's surprising how funny prison can be. Rated R.
- The Love Letter - Everyone
thinks that a letter was written pertaining to them or
their situation. Comedy ensues. Starring Tom Selleck and
Kate Capshaw. Rated PG-13.
- A Midsummer Night's Dream -
Shakespeare's romantic romp gets updated to 19th Century
Tuscany. Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer star. Rated
PG-13.
- The Mummy - A fun action
adventure starring Brendan Fraser. The effects are nice
and there are a few jumpy type suspenseful moments. Rated
PG-13.
- October Sky - This film has
received rave reviews from everybody I know. It is said
to be very inspirational. Rated PG.
- The Out of Towners - A remake
of the Neil Simon classic that flopped like nobody's
business. Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin and John Cleese don't
typically fail, but this movie did. Rated PG-13.
- Shakespeare in Love - The
winner of the 1998 Academy Award for Best Picture. It
really is good. Check it out. Rated R.
- 10 Things I Hate About You - A
cute movie loosely based on Shakespeare's "The
Taming of the Shrew". You'll want to fall in love
all over again. Rated PG-13.
- The 13th Floor - The lines of
reality and fantasy are blurred when scientists create an
alternate universe and a monster inside it. It ain't no
Matrix. Rated R.
