During their 2011 Awards Ceremony, Marine Corps veterans from the Clyde Thomason Detachment of the Marine Corps League presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg.
The award was presented to Bishop David Epps who received it on behalf of the church. Epps, a Marine veteran, served as the detachment’s first chaplain for over two years and was recently elected to serve as the junior. vice commandant. He also serves as the Jr. Vice Pound Keeper for the Military Order of the Devil Dogs, Pound 350. He is also a member of the American Legion.
When the Thomason detachment first formed three years ago, the group met in a city-owned facility. When the city decided to charge the veteran’s group a rental fee, Epps and the church rector’s council (which has six military veterans among the eight members of the council) offered the Marines the use of the church facilities at no charge.
Now, the officers of the organization meet monthly in the church’s Parish Life Center and the church hosts the monthly detachment meeting. For information on the local Marine Corps League Detachment, interested persons can log on at www.mcl1325.net.
