Who better to help students look at their career paths than experienced professionals? As part of his career unit, Whitewater High Public Safety/Law teacher Scott Schmitt brought in a series of special guests to share their perspectives.
The speakers brought a wealth of experiences from many facets of public safety: State Court Judge Jason Thompson, District Attorney Marie Border, National Guard Sergeant Brett Bentley, Deputy Coroner Lee Ellen Gaston, Federal Air Marshal Tom Kirkbride, Fayetteville Police Department Captain Jeff Harris, and Fayette County Fire and EMS Chief Jeff Hill and Assistant Chief Steven Folden.
Schmitt’s goal is to expose his students in his “Intro to Law and Public Safety,” “Criminal Justice Essentials,” and “Forensics and Criminal Investigations” classes to all of the different careers in the field of public safety on the local, state, and federal levels.
“I want the opportunity for the students to see and hear from real community leaders in the field of public safety as they begin to develop their future paths,” said Schmitt. “It is a great community outreach for school, class, and teacher. It’s real-life experiences brought to the classroom. It does not get any better than that.”
