Needed: Freeze on weapons of mass destruction

I’m not sure if hypersonic missiles or Iran’s drones have a chance of first strike capability. If so, or if some countries will think so, and/or don’t fear a second strike, then we need to take preventative steps. The same applies to nuclear weapons (with or without these,) and perhaps likewise even poison gas.

If there is a chance of conquest by China, Iran, or North Korea — or a chance of destruction by any of those countries or by Russia, we need a freeze on new missiles and/or weapons of those sorts; there should be immediate inspection of any suspicious sites in order to verify this. (If they don’t fear a second strike, or would furnish to terrorists, we need to have them dismantle what they already have — again with immediate inspection.)

Perhaps the way to do this is by offering and/or establishing increased trade while threatening increased sanctions, with the spread wide enough so that they won’t want to chance our missing any of the sites.

(For Russia, we might also try diplomacy like a NATO invitation. Alternatively, increased economic ties might forestall destruction. For North Korea, perhaps we might also give them a choice between de-nuclearizing the Korean peninsula or putting enough arms in South Korea and nearby to destroy them.)

Perhaps we can bring about human rights, such as freedom of religion; and perhaps we can get China to stop supporting North Korea if nothing else works with the latter.

  1. Sunday, August 15, 2021 – All of you devoted Fox News viewers. Turn your television tonight to any news channel you think is left leaning or click onto any newspaper that you have condemned for being biased.

See how real news organizations handle a President’s missteps. Watch how leaders from every political stripe are invited to comment, and no one is censured for ideological reasons. This is what the 4th Estate is supposed to do, not to appease the president.

    • STF I’m curious on how the “A” teams of all these news outlets will spin this tomorrow. Will they align themselves with their traditional viewer base? Will CNN/MSNBC spin these to fit their narrative? I’m watching FOX right now and it’s all Biden’s fault. I’m sure someone at CNN/MSNBC is watching FOX and is writing material for tomorrow’s show to retaliate. This “stuff” slinging is getting old. Ratings-Ratings-Ratings

I remember a time when news outlets didn’t sling “stuff” at one another. National news was half hour without the narrative; that was until Walter Cronkite gave his two cents worth.

      • Cyclist – So far the three networks, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post have all blamed the poor execution on Biden, and they have all been quite harsh. There is equivocation about whether we should have left or not – I agree with Trump and Biden that it was time to go.

As you say, we’ll have to see how this works out after the “spin cycle.” I’m just glad that Biden (or anyone else) doesn’t control the media. It is refreshing to see them following the story without regard for whom is implicated.

    • Yup, Biden is going to take a “hit” for this. I watched the “talking heads” on CNN and ABC try to figure out an earlier proclamation by Biden that the Taliban will not overrun Afghanistan. Now the Afghan president has fled the country and the Taliban are on the verge of taking Kabul as we scurry to evacuate staff and “friendlies” and preparing to shutter the embassy which wasn’t going to happen.

But I have to ask what was the endgame for Afghanistan?

Oh, Donna Brazile on ABC called the the problems at the southern border a “crisis”. Gee, some on the left are finally opening their eyes. Biden owns this as well.

      • I agree that Biden should take a hit for this across the news and political spectrum, and it is nice to see everyone reporting the obvious truth for a change. Imagine, miscalculating political events in the Middle East. All four Presidents involved with this have made blunders.

Both Trump and Biden were correct that we had to get out of Afghanistan since there was no endgame after 20 years, and there would not be one after 20 more. It seems that the United States can’t resist inserting ourselves into the civil wars of countries and somehow thinking that things will be different the next time. We can’t make a country want democracy just because we want it for them.

Will we learn this time? History emphatically says, “No!” Apparently, there is no cure for hubris.

    • Considering the international color standard for a reset button is blue… not a fact that goes unnoticed by Russians who were heavily industrialized… this was a huge faux paux by Clinton, and yet another piece of proof that American politicians are clowns not to be taken seriously.

  2. What great ideas, Alvin. Why don’t we just call up the leaders of Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia and work out a quick inspection schedule. I’m sure they would be quite hospitable.

Why hasn’t someone thought of this before?

    Truth is stranger than fiction!
