Qualifying for local political races is this week

Advance voting for the March 24 Presidential Preference Primary also begins this week — 

Qualifying — not voting — for local races in the 2020 election cycle will begin on March 2 and run through March 6.

Candidates qualifying for partisan races will do so with their respective party, while candidates for non-partisan races will qualify at the Fayette County Elections Office at the county complex in Fayetteville.

The districts on the Fayette County Commission up for election include the District 2 seat held by Commission Chairman Randy Ognio, the District 1 seat held by Commissioner Eric Maxwell and the District 5 (at-large) seat held by Commissioner Charles Oddo.

The Fayette County Board of Education posts up for election include the District 3 seat held by Chairman Scott Hollowell, the District 1 seat held by board member Barry Marchman and the District 5 (at-large) seat held by board member Brian Anderson.

Other races open for qualifying include:

• Clerk of Superior Court

• Coroner

• Probate Court Judge

• Magistrate Judge

• Sheriff

• Solicitor General of State Court

• Tax Commissioner

The candidates for the above local offices will face the voters in the May 19 balloting, which includes the Democrat and Republican primaries, the nonpartisan general election and any special election that may be needed. The general election for the partisan primaries is Nov. 3.

The advance voting for the Super Tuesday, March 24, runs Monday through Friday, March 2—6,  and March 9—13, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The final week of early voting is Monday through Friday, March 16—20, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
