After completing their “Get Moving” journey, Girl Scout troop 189 chose to collect gently-used shoes for Soles4Souls for their “take action project.” Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and from collections by the church, non-profit, and youth organizations. The charity distributes these shoes to people in need in the U.S. and abroad. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 14 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes. Troop 189 contacted schools of their members; Spring Hill Elementary, Sara Harp Minter, and Fayette Intermediate, and asked principals if they could hold a shoe collection at the schools. Between the schools, the generosity of Lisbon Baptist Church, and the visitors at Fayette County Earth Day, the troop collected 492 pairs of shoes. The girls had a lot of fun sorting and banding shoes together to get ready for transport. Troop 189 would like to thank everyone for their donations. Photo/Special.
