Seeing a lot of purple as you ride along Highway 54, or take a cruise along the cart paths in Peachtree City?

Don’t worry, it’s not your eyes. They’re painting Peachtree City Purple.

They’re putting purple bows around the City Plaza, they’re decorating the trees on the plaza around the fountain with purple lights, they’re placing purple bows on path markers, and hanging purple banners around town. They even hope to find a way to turn the water in the Fountain at City Hall Plaza purple.

So what’s all the purple about?

“Inspiration,” said Kim Westwood, Community Manager for the Fayette County Cancer Society. “Purple is the color of inspiration.”

According to Westwood, the city of Peachtree City is partnering with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life in Fayette County. Not only are they sponsoring a team in the April 29 Runway Relay at Falcon Field, they are Painting Peachtree City Purple.

“We are excited about their part in the Relay For Life,” said Westwood. “They are even planning to hang a banner for Relay for Life using two ladder fire trucks.”

Peachtree City is host to the Relay for Life this year, as the event moves to Falcon Field. The Relay kicks off April 29 at 4 p.m. at City Hall with the Torch Run with former Mayor Harold Logsdon as the first torch bearer. Logsdon is serving as Honorary Co-Chair of this year’s event, after a battle with prostate cancer last year. He underwent surgery, and now has been given a clean bill of health.

“I am fully recovered, and am exciting about my part in the Torch Run and the Relay,” he said.

The Torch will end up at Falcon Field for the opening ceremonies of the Relay For Life. Delta Airlines, which has designated the Fayette County Relay for Life as it’s Official Relay this year, will bring in seven other torches from Relays across the country, according to Westwood.

These torches will be lit from the Fayette County Torch and carried back to their home states for their Relay.

Peachtree City Relay participants are asking everyone in the city to get involved in painting the town purple for the month of April.

A Paint the Town Purple toolkit can be found on the American Cancer Society’s website — including ideas for painting your office, restaurant, school or yard purple.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event, and it’s largest single fundraiser.
