Barrett Hester, a fourth grader at Braelinn Elementary, won first place in his age division at the regional recitation contest on Feb. 2. The Griffin RESA Literacy Days Festival honors those from third through fifth grades who have already won their county competitions in either recitation, writing, or drama to compete at the regional level. Hesterrecited “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer to win his classroom competition, the school competition at Braelinn Elementary, then the Fayette County competition to earn the right to represent Fayette County in the RESA Literacy Days Festival. The students are judged on diction, fluency, expression, eye contact, and, of course, memory of the piece they have chosen to name a few of the categories of scoring. Photo/Special.
