Joseph “Joe” Lawrence Gelmini, 70, passed away on December 20, 2017. He was born in Baltimore, Md. on April 28, 1947 to Dorothy and Adolph Gelmini.
He was a graduate of The University of Maryland. He was an avid railroad fan and worked for Norfolk Southern for 36 years. While employed, he worked his way from trainee to Director of Training and Development. Joe served as the Eastern District Director for the National Model Railroad Association. He enjoyed building model railroad layouts, cruising with his wife, as well as traveling all over the world. He was also the Piedmont Division NMRA Train Show Manager and a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer. He cherished his family and friends above all. His love for life and unbeatable sense of humor greatly impacted everyone he met.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Dorothy Gelmini, and his parents-in-laws, Edmond and Rita Curtin.
He is survived by his wife of 491⁄2years, Kathleen (Kathy) Gelmini; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Heather Gelmini; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Valerie Gelmini; his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and H. Will Boyter; his grandchildren, Andrew (Hannah), Tyler, Alex and Jack Gelmini, as well as two granddaughters, Jillian and Maryn Boyter; and his great-granddaughter, Aubrey Gelmini.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville Chapel, with Mr. Bob Lupton delivering the eulogy. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. prior to the service.
