William A. “Bill” Fountain, of Peachtree City passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the age of 87.
On February 8, 1930, Bill was born to the late Henry S. and Aurelia J. Fountain, of Hawkinsville, Ga. Bill married Ethel Lee Edwards on April 6, 1951. They celebrated a beautiful marriage, lasting 66 years.
After receiving his BA from Mercer University in 1951, Bill began his career with the Department of Human Services, State of Georgia. Bill went on to receive his Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina in 1956. Bill’s career with the Department of Human Services spanned a period of 33 years. In his role as Division Chief/Program Manager for the state’s Emergency Health Unit, the Emergency Management System for ambulances and medical training was developed and implemented for the State of Georgia.
Bill served in the U.S. Active Army Reserves for more than 35 years, reaching the rank of Colonel in the Medical Service Corp. He was a graduate of the U.S. Command and General Staff College in 1975.
After graduating with a JD from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1980, Bill entered private law practice in 1982 as an avocation. He earned his LLM from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1987. Bill serviced as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Georgia Department of Human Resources for 13 years.
Bill was quite involved in community services. In 2008, he was a charter member of the Healing Bridge Clinic, Inc. in Peachtree City and served there as both President and board member. There were many other civic and community organizations where Bill served, including Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels, and as an active member at Peachtree City First Baptist Church. Bill, an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends.
Bill is survived by his wife, Ethel; his two daughters, Anita Butler (son-in-law Glen Butler) and Nan Lester, of Peachtree City; three grandchildren, Tiffany Merritt (Dr. Jamie Merritt) of Dacula, Tim Butler (Meredith Butler) of Senoia, and Hannah Lester of Peachtree City; and six great-grandchildren, Hallie, Sophie, Tucker, Evie Merritt, and Grey and Ivy Butler of Senoia.
A Celebration of Life service was held at Peachtree City First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11 a.m.. The family received friends from 10 – 11 a.m., prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Healing Bridge Clinic, Inc., Peachtree City.
