The 29th annual Lutheran Summer Music Academy (LSM) recently took place at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa from June 20 to July 18.

LSM is the pinnacle program of the Lutheran Music Program and is one of the nation’s premier summer music training programs for young people. Fayetteville resident and flutist, Jamie Callison, was one of 149 students to participate in LSM this summer.

This year, high school age student musicians from 33 states and three foreign countries spent four weeks participating in a rigorous schedule that included individual instrument lessons, small ensembles, musicianship class, large ensembles, electives (including conducting, jazz, and handbells) as well as attendance at daily recitals. Open to students of all faith backgrounds, LSM students also participated in daily worship services, a hymn festival, and numerous recreational activities.

Callison studied privately with Suzanne Ernst and was a member of the band under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Doebler. She also participated in chapel choir, flute choir, and bell choir.

“I loved this program,” said Callison. “I got to make great music and great friends this summer at LSM. It’s a perfect program for anybody who really loves music.”

Students were served by a faculty roster of 34 educators, all of whom are esteemed, practicing, professional musicians and teachers from throughout the United States. LSM culminated in Festival Week which included student solo and chamber recitals and evening concerts by the band, orchestra, and choir. More than 2,000 people were in attendance.
The mission of LSM is to transform lives and connect people through faith and music. LSM fosters musical excellence in a caring community for high school band, orchestra, choral, piano and pipe organ students from all faith backgrounds.

Lutheran Music Program’s national offices are located in Minneapolis, MN, while LSM itself rotates its location among various Lutheran colleges. Since its founding in 1981, more than 3,000 students have attended Lutheran Summer Music. Hundreds of alumni have pursued careers in music education, performance, and church music. LSM 2011, which marks the program’s 30th anniversary, will be held June 26 to July 24 at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
