The Paul Conlan Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to West Georgia student Tiffany Morris.
The scholarship originated via the Simple Pleasures Photography Competition to honor the legacy of Newnan resident and award winning photographer Paul Conlan.
An art major with a painting concentration, Tiffany uses photography in the course of study for her career which satisfies the criteria for the scholarship. She is a Newnan High School graduate and a senior at the University of West Georgia. Her parents (Wendy Martinez and Stephen Rice) are both artists and thus, it did not come as a surprise that Tiffany developed an interest in art at an early age.
“Vintage photographs held a sort of magic for me as a child,” she said.
In high school, she was involved in the Art Club and took advanced art classes.
Tiffany has excelled both academically and creatively as a student; consistently being on the Dean’s List for academic achievement; receiving awards for her works as well as for her work ethic. The excellence of her talented achievements led to a commission from Cobb County for her to paint a 6-foot image of the tiger mascot for Tapp Middle School, which is proudly displayed in the front of the school building. She has also created several murals, including one in downtown Carrollton.
With respect to photography, Tiffany particularly enjoys working abstractly with her camera (i.e., taking images of the familiar and transforming them to the unfamiliar). Tiffany is the inaugural recipient of the Paul Conlan Memorial Scholarship and the stepdaughter of Sammy Martintez.
Simple Pleasures is proud to host Tiffany in addition to the public and photographers juried into Simple Pleasures: The Nature Show Saturday, April 2, at the McRitchie Hollis Museum, 74 Jackson Street in Newnan with an opening reception beginning at 3 p.m. This show occurs annually on the first Saturday of April.
