Antiques are like open books, but only if you know how to read them.

Certified appraiser Valerie Hale will provide two hours of learning – including a verbal evaluation of pre-selected items from the community – for program attendees Saturday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Peachtree City Library. Topics to be discussed include the ins and outs of a formal appraisal, how to research items, and comparison with other submissions via PowerPoint slideshow. Come and share this unique adult “storytime” as our local appraiser shares her knowledge of the who, what, when, why, and where of local treasures.

Hale will select 12-15 items submitted online from residents of Fayette County for an informal appraisal/talk. Selected items will be representative of different categories for maximum instructional value for program attendees. Submissions will be accepted at ptc.lib.antiques@gmail.com. Please include photos (2-5) that help identify or illustrate the properties of the item. Include measurements and any background information. Submit an item that can be brought to the event if selected for inclusion. Owners of items selected for inclusion in the program will be notified via email. You may submit up to three (3) items; however, they must be submitted separately – one item per email. Please do not bring your item(s) to the event unless you are notified that your item has been selected.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m.

Submissions must be done via email. In-person submissions will not be considered.

Opinions of value are informal, and may not be used for insurance or charitable donations, which require a certified appraisal. Objects welcome for appraisal include fine art, small pieces of furniture, ceramics, glassware, vintage photographs, advertising, folk art, assorted toys, metalware, clocks, and costume jewelry. Excluded items include all weapons (including swords and knives), coins and paper money, stamp collections, and fine jewelry including precious gems.

Valerie Vale, ISA CAPP, is a certified member of the International Society of Appraisers. She has provided written appraisals for antiques, residential contents, and fine art for 13 years. Hale grew up in Savannah, breathing Southern history and learning the story of antiques. She currently provides appraisals for insurance, charitable donation, divorce, and estates. In addition, she instructs other appraisers in the field and consults with clients helping them learn the stories of their unique treasures.
