John R. Nunnally, Sr., 89, passed away on December 5, 2015 following a short illness.

He was a resident of College Park, Fayetteville and, most recently, Union City, Ga. A retired educator, Mr. Nunnally taught in the Fulton and Clayton County School Systems for more than 40 years. In his second career, he worked for Delta Airlines in the Headquarters.

Mr. Nunnally was born in Anniston, Ala. and reared in the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home in Hapeville. Following service in Europe as an Army Infantryman in World War II, he graduated from Mercer University and returned to serve at the Children’s Home for a number of years. He was a graduate and professor at Georgia Southern University in the early 60’s and returned to the Atlanta area where he served as an elementary and middle school educator. He was instrumental in bringing the first computers to the classroom in Clayton County, was a long-time YMCA Camp Director in Atlanta and served as a coach and mentor to thousands of Atlanta-area youth.

He was a servant leader throughout his professional career and his years of active community service. He was president of the Association of Childhood Education International, a deacon in the Baptist Church, a Mason, and president of the Alumni Association of the Children’s Home.

Mr. Nunnally was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lila Nunnally.

He is survived by his sisters Emily Maddox and Caroline Duckworth of Tupelo, Miss.; his three children Bob Nunnally and his spouse Sue Nunnally, LeAnn Coleman and her spouse Lee Coleman, and Charles Nunnally; his grandson William Nunnally and his spouse Eunice Nunnally; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and their families.

Visitation will be held at Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home in Fayetteville, Ga. on Friday, December 11th from 5-7 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, December 12th at Liberty Baptist Church in Fayetteville at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church of Fayetteville, Ga.
