In honor of National Feral Cat Day (Oct. 16), volunteers from the Fayette Humane Society conducted a class in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). FHS has been working with the Fayette County Board of Commissioners and Fayette County Animal Welfare & Control to implement TNR as the preferred method of controlling the feral cat population.
The cats are humanely trapped, transported to a low-cost clinic where they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and then returned to the area where they were found to continue their lives outdoors. Cats determined to be tame and kittens young enough to be socialized are taken into foster care and placed for adoption into permanent indoor homes.
Released cats are marked with an eartip (1/4 inch cut off the left ear) which is a universal sign that the animals have been sterilized and vaccinated.
