Portion of old school to be transformed into a garden spot

A Jan. 20 decision by the Fayette County Board of Education paved the way for a community garden to be established on the grounds of the former Tyrone Elementary School.

Superintendent Jody Barrow said he had received correspondence from Tyrone Mayor Eric Dial indicating that a new garden club had inquired about using a portion of the former school grounds to establish a community garden.

Barrow said the requested location is on the northeast side of the former school.

“It’s a good idea and a good opportunity for the community,” Barrow said.

Dial on Wednesday said a local resident wants to establish the Tyrone Community Garden. The new organization is expected to hold its first meeting over the weekend, Dial said.

The unanimous vote by the school board came with Barrow saying that some items pertaining to the use of the property still have to be negotiated with the garden club.

Barrow also noted that a clause in the agreement would have to indicate that conditions could change if the school board were to have a party lease or buy the former school.

Dial on Wednesday expressed his thanks to the school board for enabling the new community effort.
