McIntosh, Starr’s Mill at top of AAAAA standings

With last week’s baseball finals closing the book on high school sports for the 2013-14 school year, the final standing were released by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association for the annual Directors Cup, with McIntosh and Starr’s Mill the top two for girls’ sports in AAAAA and in the top three overall.

The two Fayette schools were extremely close to each other in all three listings, with both in the top five in boys’ sports as well.

The GADA uses a point system to rank schools based on their teams’ performances in various sports, and the schools with the highest point totals for all sports at the end of the year win the awards in each classification.

In the overall AAAAA standings, McIntosh (1012) edged out Starr’s Mill (1009) to capture second place behind Pope (1060). In girls’ sports, McIntosh scored 564 points to lead the way, followed by Starr’s Mill with 560.

Pope came in atop the boys’ standings with 507, while Starr’s Mill (449) was fourth and McIntosh (448) was fifth.

The top score for any single sport is 100 points for a state championship. The McIntosh girls picked up three titles (volleyball, cheerleading, soccer) and the boys won it all in soccer. The school also got points in both genders for cross-country, lacrosse, tennis and track. The boys scored in basketball, golf, swimming and football; the girls’ softball team contributed to the school’s total as well.

Starr’s Mill got 100 points for a state championship in girls’ tennis and 90 points as runner-up in girls’ soccer. Both teams accumulated points in cross-country, golf, track and swimming. The girls got points for cheerleading, lacrosse, volleyball and basketball. The boys scored with baseball, tennis, wrestling and soccer.

Landmark finished eighth overall in A with 832.5 points, just behind region rival ELCA (839). Holy Innocents’ came in first in boys, girls and overall points. Landmark was seventh in the boys’ standings and tenth on the girls’ list.
