Sandy Creek High bookkeeper Brandi Crews makes sure everything adds up at her school.

Crews is in charge of everything financial for the school, including more than 150 accounts and different clubs, athletics teams, and departments. She also pays bills and places orders for staff.

“Anything that has to do with money, I’m handling it,” said Crews. “It’s a big job, but I enjoy it a lot.”

Prior to joining Sandy Creek earlier this year, she worked at Ameris Bank. She was influenced by her grandmother who was in banking. Crews was with her a lot and picked up some of the same skills.

“Numbers have always been my strong suit,” said Crews. “That’s what I love to do.”

Crews recently played a key role in protecting our taxpayers’ money. There is a system in place where any checks from the school are uploaded and the bank flags any discrepancies regardless of how small it may be, whether it is a misspelled word or something else.

One check got flagged, and Crews examined it further. The check had been washed, with the suspect changing it to their name and adding an extra $2,000 to the amount. She got on the phone immediately to stop the check, and law enforcement got involved.

Her keen eye helped keep the would-be thief from stealing funds meant for our schools.

“Luckily I was able to catch it and stop it.”

Not many see the work she does, but it is a vital piece of keeping Sandy Creek thriving.

“It’s kind of a behind the scenes job, which I’m totally fine with, but it is super important,” said Crews. “We really are what’s getting everything handled. It’s a lot of fun.”
