Jane Whitehurst: Like No Other

Dogwood Gallery is proud to present Like No Other, a solo exhibition of new and recent works by acclaimed abstract expressionist painter Jane Whitehurst. The show opens with a public reception on Friday, August 1, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, and will remain on view through August 31, 2025.

In this expansive and deeply engaging exhibition, Whitehurst’s paintings explore the interplay between gesture and stillness, structure and spontaneity. Her work is rooted in the lineage of Abstract Expressionism, yet diverges meaningfully from its historic bravado and theatricality. Instead, Whitehurst offers a quieter, more intimate approach—where each mark, erasure, or color shift feels carefully considered yet emotionally charged.

Her compositions, often built through layers of muted tones, scumbled textures, and rhythmic forms, conjure both memory and atmosphere. At times architectural, at other times organic or calligraphic, her visual language resists categorization. In several works, forms appear to hover between representation and abstraction—suggesting maps, figures, or fragmented symbols—without ever collapsing into the literal. It’s this open-ended quality that invites viewers to linger, reflect, and return.
