An altercation over what appeared to be a Sept. 14 drug transaction in north Fayette County resulted in the shooting death of an Atlanta man by a 25-year-old Union City man who has been charged with felony murder, law officers said.
Kevin Jemario Pope, 25, of Union City, was charged with felony murder, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to Sheriff Barry Babb.
Babb said deputies at approximately 12:56 p.m. on Sept. 14 responded to a shooting at Greenview Circle in the Landmark Mobile Home Park after Fayette County 911 received a call from a man claiming that he just shot another man who tried to rob him.
“When detectives arrived they found that 25-year-old Kevin Jemario Pope, of Union City, had shot 22-year-old Oscar Fuentes, Jr. of Atlanta,” Babb said. “It is believed that Pope and Fuentes were in the middle of a drug transaction when Pope claimed that Fuentes tried to stab him. Fuentes was shot multiple times and died at the scene.”
Babb said Pope and Fuentes initially met at a gas station in Union City. Pope agreed to give Fuentes a ride to the Fayette County residence since Fuentes had relatives living at Landmark.
Fuentes was shot in the head and torso. The number of times he was shot and locations of gunshots sustained is being determined at the autopsy, said Babb.
Babb said Pope called 911 because he maintained that he shot Fuentes in self-defense. Investigators have not disclosed if Fuentes’ alleged weapon was found at the scene.
What was found at the scene was an undisclosed amount of suspected marijuana, Babb said.
