Thomas LaRue Mathis, Jr., 85, of Fayetteville passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018.  He was born on January 16, 1933 in Rome, Ga. to the late Thomas LaRue Mathis, Sr. and Katharine Stancel Mathis.

Tom proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  He was retired from Delta Airlines after 35 years of employment.  Tom was a deacon at Emmanuel Baptist Church for 40 years and in his later years attended McDonough Road Baptist Church.  He was also a member of the American Legion and Delta Pioneers.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Tyler Martin Mathis.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary L. Mathis; his sons, Todd L. and Patty Mathis and Dana L. and Linda K. Mathis; his grandchildren, Justin and Joshua Mathis, Michael and Amanda Masrob, Christine and Michael Donato, and Matthew and Tara Masrob; eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Joyce Johnson.

His funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018 in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Hinton Harris, Justin Mathis and Joshua Mathis officiating. Burial followed at Turin Memorial Gardens, Turin, Ga.  The family received friends from 12-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
