The ladies in the Quilters Guild of the Southern Crescent have learned what it takes to be satisfied in life: hard work, serving others, finding a hobby that relaxes you, and sharing that hobby with others in a congenial atmosphere. The ladies enjoy all sorts of needle work and encourage each other as well as explore new techniques at its meetings.
The Guild was first established in January, 1998 and continues to add members and to serve the community through the making and selling of quilts.
They have available at this time its 2013 quilt that is being raffled off throughout this year and will be awarded in December. It is being exhibited at various quilt shops and will be shown at the Courthouse Art Show in May. Phone numbers to obtain raffle tickets will be shown at the end of this article.
The group has given lessons to students at Fayetteville Montessori School and the students then raffled off the quilt they made to obtain more playground equipment. Guilders will occasionally make a small quilt on their own and donate it to the school to be raffled off.
The money received from the 2013 quilt will allow the ladies to buy quilting material and the batting that goes in between the quilt and the backing. These quilts will be donated to Promise Place in Fayetteville and servicemen at the Veterans Administration Hospital. The Guild is especially proud of participating in the Quilts of Valor as one of its community service projects. These all have special designs with a military theme. The average quilt will take at least 30 hours and up to make. The 2013 quilt has almost 100 hours in its completion by several dozen sewers.
