Coweta County commissioners last week voted to decrease the speed limit along Morgan Road off U.S. Highway 16 that runs behind the Coweta Charter Academy at Senoia. Once it receives state approval the speed limit will decrease to 40 miles per hour.

Morgan Road extends from Lawshe Road on the west to Hwy. 16 on the east, which by default carries a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour. The 2,700-foot road has no current speed limit posting.

An Aug. 31 letter from county Development and Engineering Director Wayne Kennedy in addressing the need to decrease the speed limit on Morgan Road said, “The increase in traffic volume combined with the altered traffic patterns is not compatible with a 55 mile per hour speed limit.”

A traffic study performed on the roadway showed an average of 460 vehicles using the road on school days.

Kennedy’s recommendation, based on the study, called for a reduction to 40 miles per hour, along with a request to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office to amend the radar permit and to the Ga. Dept. of Transportation for approval.

Once approved, Kennedy said it would cost approximately $250 for updated signs and sign posts.
