More than a year after allegedly stealing a car, an East Point man was tracked down by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office authorities and taken to jail.
The initial interaction with deputies took place in April of 2023, when the suspect was pulled over after being seen driving with his hazard lights on and a tag light missing. He was found to have some warrants for failure to appear as well as some child support obligations he was in violation of, according to a spokesman with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
After being taken to jail that time, he posted bond and left without his impounded car. It was not until a couple of weeks later that police discovered the car was stolen and its VIN had been altered.
Warrants were issued based on that and Phillip Gillmore, 53, of East Point was picked up May 13 on two counts of theft by receiving stolen property.
Another stolen car was retrieved May 14 on Hwy. 314. Deputies on patrol got an alert that the vehicle was a rental which had been reported stolen by Budget Rental Car. Kamau Walker, 30, of Fairburn was arrested and charged with a felony count of theft by receiving stolen property along with other charges that included marijuana possession, driving with a suspended license and a seat belt violation.
Elsewhere in Fayette County, a traffic stop in Peachtree City was conducted May 18 around 1:30 a.m. due to a headlight violation. The officer learned that the driver had a suspended license because of a failure to appear. From outside the vehicle, he saw a handgun visible under the driver’s seat. A criminal history check showed that the driver was a convicted felon.
Victor Brooks, 34, of Atlanta was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon as well as driving with a suspended license along with seat belt, headlight and license plate violations.
