Eagle Scout project makes Whitewater Middle sparkle

Wildcat pride runs deep for Matthew Gulas. Gulas, now a junior at Whitewater High, recently returned to Whitewater Middle to install benches and plant rose bushes for his Eagle Scout project.

For his Eagle Scout project with Troop 212, Gulas thought back to his time at Whitewater Middle. He remembered that the area in front of the school where he used to wait on a ride home was not the most inviting space. Along with planting rose bushes, he chose to make benches because there weren’t enough places to sit. He ended up building three benches, dedicating one to former Principal Connie Baldwin and one to Yvonne Norton, the school registrar who passed away in March 2021.

Gulas, who is on the STEAM Team and in the Robotics Club at Whitewater High, has been in scouting since he was 6 years old, and his troop has conducted many of their Eagle Scout requirements at the nearby schools, churches, and at The Ridge nature area. One of his Troopmasters is even Eric Falkenhagen, Assistant Principal at Sara Harp Minter Elementary.
