Big changes may be coming to Peachtree City’s oldest shopping center if the City Council approves the requested rezoning off North Lake Drive at the June 16 meeting.
In addition, the city is expected to sign an agreement with the Fayette County Board of Education that will result in the paving of Stagecoach Road leading to the newly constructed replacement for Booth Middle School.
The rezoning for Aberdeen Center, if approved, will lead to the demolition of one leg of the L-shaped center — long the headquarters of the inconic Partners II Pizza restaurant — and the construction of a 3-story brick mixed-use building.
The redevelopment will have a new Partners II and 12 luxury condominiums with retail on the ground floor.
The road paving pact has the city paying the school system $750,000 and eventually getting a street paved to city standards plus an adjacent paved multi-use cart path from the city path to the new school.
The school board was expected to approve the intergovernmental agreement at its workshop June 14.
The council meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
I’m not opposed to rezoning the Aberdeen Center as long as proliferation of multifamily housing doesn’t take place; it helps make for a diverse community.
I’m opposed to the City paying $750,000 for any part of Stagecoach Road school project. The Fayette County Board of Education (FCBOE) should go to the State of Georgia and grovel for the project. FCBOE made their decision without civic (or at least Peachtree City) input and pay the consequences as well as reap the benefits of their decision. That is how institutions, as well as people, learn responsibility.

It is a countywide school district so why is only Peachtree City on the hook for this mistake by the School Board?
The City owns the right-of-ways and is responsible for everything coming with it. I’m guessing someone in City Hall didn’t respond in a timely way to a Board of Education’s request for input on building the new Booth, but that’s probably giving too much credit to the Board. Afterall, it appears they decided to build the school to to use up the ESPLOST so they could get another ESPLOST on the books. It’s only money; who cares?
This is a really bad idea, Peachtree City is designed for families not dense residential. It’s a beautiful city and has been a beautiful city for a reason. I have no doubt there is money to be made by the politicians and the government in this deal. It will not benefit the families of Peachtree city. If you want to live in a dense area move to Atlanta.
From what I’ve heard around the water-cooler, families can live in the condominiums.
