For the last 22 years, volunteers from 19 different faith groups along with several other community organizations, prepare, pack and deliver sack lunches each week for 8 weeks during the summer to students in the Fayette Co. school system who are on the free & reduced lunch program.
Members of Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Fayetteville First UMC, Jack & Jill of Fayette, Peachtree City First Baptist Church, Fayette Presbyterian, Evergreen Church, Peachtree City First Presbyterian, Olivet Baptist, The Islamic Community Center of Atlanta, Congregation B’nai Israel, Church of the Nativity, Holy Trinity, St. Matthews, St. Gabriel, Prince of Peace, The Islamic Speakers Bureau, Holly Grove AME, The Real Life Center, the Master Gardeners of Fayette County & DFACS work together to make sure that students in our county receive a lunch Monday through Friday throughout the summer. The Real Life Center provided 1800 weekend grocery bags for every family on Fridays.
This past summer, there were over 400 volunteers that helped provide an average of 380 lunches per weekday for a total of 14,820 for the summer. From purchasing the groceries, to packing the lunches, to loading vehicles, to delivering lunches to each home across the county is a labor of love.
On Friday, August 21st, an Interfaith Luncheon was hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, celebrating and honoring the many volunteers who put so much work and love into serving the children in Fayette county. The program included messages of service from Mary Harris from St. Gabriel Catholic Church & PTC Mayor Kim Learnard, stats from Cindy Hall, the county summer lunch program co-coordinator along with a musical number, “Hold On” by Amanda Toronto.
22 years of coming together as a community to ensure that no child in our county goes without lunch.
In order to receive the summer lunches, families must contact their school counselor. If your church or organization would like to participate in the summer lunch program, please contact Cindy Hall via email [email protected]
