In Coweta County less than 25% of the registered voters made all the decisions. 27,182 voters out of 110,656 registered showed up to the polls. In several municipalities, incumbent mayors went down with the vote.
Here are the results of the election:
Newnan
Longtime Mayor Keith Brady lost his three-way race with fewer votes than either of his challengers. The new mayor of Newnan will be James Shepherd, who got 44% of the vote, to his next challenger Danny Beck’s 32% and Mayor Brady’s not quite 24%.
Newnan Council Member District 2, Post A Incumbent Rhodes Shell lost his seat to longtime Newnan resident Jennifer Cheever Morrison. She got 67.8% of the votes to handily win.
The Newnan Homestead Referendum passed with nearly 80% of the vote.
Senoia
For a non-presidential year and no major statewide races, Senoia saw decent turnout for their mayoral election, 38.52% of registered voters. They were there to hand the role of mayor over to Senoia’s major developer Scott Tigchelaar who won with nearly 66% of the vote. Incumbent Mayor William “Dub” Pearman, III got 581 votes to Tigchelaar’s 1,127.
Voters were also there to unseat Incumbent Senoia Council Seat Post 1, Matthew Foust. His opponent, Brent Anderson, won 73% of the vote.
Turin
Over 45% of registered voters in Turin turned out to unseat the mayor, Incumbent Alan Starr. Challenger Walter Sprouse won 80% of the vote, with 171 votes to Starr’s 42.
In Turin, voters could select two of the three candidates for Town Council. Lydia Wallin got the most votes at 147 or 68% of those voting. Second place and still on the council was Kimbely Barnett with 124 votes, or 58%. The only challenger not gaining a seat on council was Phillip Smith with his 94 votes or 44%.
Turin also voted on whether they would allow Distilled Spirits by the Drink. This measure passed with 68% of the vote.
Grantville
The City Council for Grantville Post 3 had a three way race, and Incumbent Casey Evans won with 47.9% of the vote, or 213 votes, over his challengers Mark Bynum and Selma P. Coty, who got 162 and 70 votes, respectively.
Grantville’s Post 4 also saw an incumbent win, as Joseph R. Breyne took over 60% of the vote, handily besting Barham Lundy.
Haralson
Haralson’s only question was whether to allow “Distilled Spirits by the Drink on Premise Consumption” like Turin. That passed with 72% of the vote, but only 29 total people voted on that measure out of 150 registered voters.
Coweta Tax Measures and Referendums
It was “yes” to everything on the taxes and referendums. The ESPLOST passed with 65.8% of the vote. The FLOST passed with 53.8% of the vote. And the Increased Senior Homestead Exemption passed with 78.6% approval.
Georgia
Coweta’s results for Public Service Commissioner matched the county’s Republican nature. Even though PSC District 2 Incumbent Tim Echols got 59.7% of Coweta’s vote, he lost his race statewide to Democratic challenger Alicia M. Johnson.
For PSC District 3, the Incumbent Republican Fitz Johnson got 59.3% of the vote in Coweta, but lost statewide to Peter Hubbard, a Democrat.
