Pop Rocks helped Kedron Elementary use their senses for science.

The 2nd grade was learning to use their five senses for science investigation purposes. The focus leading up to that activity was the skill of observation: What it is and isn’t, what a good scientist should do as they observe a natural or unnatural phenomena, and how the observations should be recorded thoroughly.

Students recorded observations of their Pop Rocks by smelling, touching, hearing, seeing, and, finally, tasting them. They applied their new knowledge of states of matter and physical properties to their experiences on a recording sheet.

Teacher Lisa May noted that the activity supports the learning targets of classifying objects using physical properties and describing the three main states of matter and how they can sometimes change.

“We decided to introduce these concepts in this lesson so students can see how fun observation can be, have an opportunity to be young scientists, work toward developing stronger science vocabulary, learn to ask and seek answers about the natural world around us, and experience a multi-sensory hands-on activity.”
