Honorable Mayor Learnard, council members Holland, Brown, Johnson, and City Manager Justin Strickland,
I have never left a Peachtree City Council Meeting feeling embarrassed and ashamed of the behavior of any Council members, until tonight.
As a citizen, tax payer and homeowner, I found the behavior of Mr Holland and Miss Brown to be disrespectful to not only all those in attendance, but to the hardworking staff of city, Justin Strickland, Laura Brown, and the Honorable Mayor Learnard. I stress Honorable.
It was obvious that Mr Holland and Miss Brown planned to hijack the budget vote, completely blindsiding all in attendance. It was an orchestrated ambush. If they felt so strongly to ‘give part of the reserve back to the citizens’ why did they not raise this during the public meetings? It was grandstanding and downright irresponsible. Homeowners wouldn’t even benefit from this. You are not representing the citizens. Apparently you are trying to give cuts for businesses. I am absolutely disgusted at their atrocious behavior. It’s an embarrassment.
I applaud Council Member Johnson for being level headed and voting no. Her comments were thoughtful and on point especially for being put on the spot. I was grateful for her knowledge and thoughtful responses.
The Honorable Kim Learnard, as always, showed real leadership and willingness to have all parties heard while still serving the interests of the citizens… the citizens that fully expected OUR budget to be approved and passed as it was presented to us. Now that it is being tabled, I would hope there will public meetings for citizen input because I DO NOT want a millage rollback by ‘taking it from the reserves’. It is fiscally irresponsible.
Furthermore, as was stated, a millage rate change won’t affect homeowners this year. It gives the appearance that Mr Holland and Miss Brown are set on giving a break to businesses. Their stance of ‘giving back to the citizens’ falls sorely short.
The citizens wanted the budget approved and passed… and not be subjected to pettiness and showboating.
I appreciate your time in reading this.
