The question was very mundane in its context.
This past Monday I called Ellie White-Stevens, the new owner and editor of The Citizen, to ask her about whether one of my articles had been posted onto The Citizen website. I had written it, but I couldn’t find it there.
She was very gracious and took time from her busy schedule to look on the website for it herself.
Time out! Let’s take a moment for a Shout Out to Ellie, who is doing a fabulous job of picking up where Cal Beverly left off. I thought so highly of Cal for his decades of dedication and diligence in visioning and publishing The Citizen. And remember, it was a newspaper, on paper, thrown into our driveways every week for years and years before it was driven to online only. But now Ellie is bringing The Citizen to our community in a fresh new way with an even broader expansion of news and features. Shout Out to Ellie!
So, Ellie said to me on the phone, “Oh, I see it. It’s in Faith.” I had scrolled up and down the dropdown menu several times before I called her and had not seen Faith. I said, “Faith?” She said, “Yes, Faith.”
After scrolling up and down again several times with her still on the line, I found Community and Columnists, but no Faith.
So, I said, in a bit of confusion, “Can you help me find Faith?”
There was a pause of silence for just a few seconds. Then Ellie said, “That sounds like what your next article should be.”
I said, “I was just thinking the same thing.”
“Can you help me find Faith?” The question had gone to a whole new level. It was not so mundane anymore.
If you read this on Sunday, May 11, you are celebrating that it is Mothers’ Day.
Of course, Happy Mothers’ Day to all you beautiful and selfless mothers!
“Can you help me find Faith?”
Dear Mothers, I propose to you on this your day of honor that this is the key question your child has for you. “Mommy, can you help me find Faith?” Of course, this is a non-verbal question. It is a question that comes from the inborn silent heart and soul of your precious God-given child, not from their lips.
And to say this is the key question kids have for their moms is to say volumes. Kids have a thousand questions. All day. Every day. I don’t need to give you a list of examples here. You can recount these inquisitions pounding your ears.
“Mommy, can you help me find Faith?” Please do not take this as any form of indictment or challenge.
Here’s the good news. God will help you. God is empowering you. Romans 10:17 in Holy Scripture declares, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”
I have encouraged young parents over many years to make use of the many children’s Bible story books available to you. One is simply The Children’s Bible Story Book. So many others are similar.
Mommy, please use the Word of God with and for your children. Read them Bible stories every night. Yes, please, every night. Talk about God and Jesus to your children every day. Pray with them every day. Tell them Jesus loves you every day. Tell them every day they can trust God. Tell them every day you have Faith in God, and they can too.
And I am well aware of this, that you, Mommy, may be struggling with your faith, as well. It may well be that you are the one asking, even begging, “Can you help me find Faith?”
Mommy, God is here for you, too. His Word is here for you, too. There are so many resources available in our local churches. Find a church near you. Take your child. Get involved Sunday after Sunday, Wednesday after Wednesday.
In addition, there are so many resources available online to help lead you and guide you in matters of Faith. “The Bible” app is one. One app I like is “Portals of Prayer.”
The point here is simply this. “Can you help me find Faith?” can be a mundane question in a website conversation. However, it can be the most important question your children ever ask. And it can be the most important question you, Mommy, ever ask and answer.
Another great declaration from Holy Scripture for us here is this. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 KJV
I remember today my beloved and sainted mother. Her picture as my Mommy is at the lead of this article. Even though my dad was a pastor and influenced me greatly, I believe my mom had even more impact on my beginning journey of faith. Thank you, Mom, you definitely “Helped me find Faith.”
Happy Mothers’ Day, all dear Moms!
And thanks, Ellie, for the kick-start to this article.
As always, Amen! And Amen!
