Fayette County State Court Judge Jason B. Thompson has been recognized for his exceptional dedication to public service and community engagement with a nomination for the prestigious Justice Robert Benham Award.

The Justice Robert Benham Award for Community Service, established in 1998 by the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism, recognizes Georgia lawyers and judges who go beyond their official duties to make a lasting impact on their communities. Named after The Honorable Robert Benham, the first African American Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, the award highlights the importance of civic engagement within the legal profession.

Judge Thompson, who has served Fayette County for more than 13 years as a State Court Judge, has built a reputation for his commitment to justice, education, and mentorship. His leadership extends beyond the courtroom, impacting countless lives through his outreach efforts.

A strong advocate for youth and education, Judge Thompson regularly visits local schools to teach students about the legal system, guiding young minds through programs such as the Laws of Life Essay Contest and classroom discussions with forensic science and pre-law students. His mentorship has inspired many to pursue careers in law and public service.

His work doesn’t stop at education—Judge Thompson also spearheaded The People’s Law School, a free program designed to make the legal system more accessible to the public. Additionally, his creation of Fayette County’s DUI/Drug Court and Veterans Court has not only saved the county significant resources but has also changed lives by providing alternatives to incarceration.

Beyond his judicial duties, Judge Thompson is an active participant in community initiatives. He has volunteered as a soccer referee, supported breast cancer awareness efforts, and played a key role in Leadership Fayette. His Free Bicycles for Children program has provided countless kids with their first set of wheels, reinforcing his belief in giving back to the community.

Judge Thompson’s community service also extends to Fayette County’s senior citizens. Through his work with Fayette Senior Services, he has supported their education programming, offering People’s Law School presentations to help seniors better understand the legal system. He and his family regularly assist in maintaining the organization’s community garden, creating a therapeutic and enjoyable space for seniors to gather and engage in outdoor activities. His hands-on approach ensures that when the senior community needs support, he is either directly involved or connecting them with the right resources.

Fayette County Schools Superintendent Jonathan Patterson praised Judge Thompson’s dedication, stating, “His tireless efforts to educate and uplift young people make him an inspiration. His contributions will positively impact our community for years to come.”

With his unwavering commitment to justice, education, and public service, Judge Jason Thompson exemplifies the spirit of the Justice Robert Benham Award. His work continues to shape Fayette County, proving that leadership is not just about the law—it’s about serving the people.
