It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Daniel Scanlan Sr., 81, who passed away on January 5, 2025. Known as “Joe” to friends and family and affectionately called “Pop Pop” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joe was a man full of life, laughter, and love, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Born on August 5, 1943, in Pottsville, PA, Joe was the son of Joseph E. Scanlan and Valeria Katherine Rothermel-Scanlan. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Jo Scanlan (1964-2010), with whom they shared 45 years of marriage, as well as his brother-in-law, Ren Jenkins Sr.

Joe proudly served in the U.S. Navy before embarking on a long and fulfilling career in aviation. He worked for Eastern Airlines for 21 years as an aircraft maintenance technician, where his technical expertise and hands-on approach earned him great respect. After Eastern Airlines, Joe continued his career in aviation as a flight engineer with Air Transport International, flying cargo planes across the globe. His dedication to his craft, as well as his love of flying, made him a valuable member of the aviation community.
Outside of his professional life, Joe was known for his craftsmanship and love of music. He was a talented drummer, playing in several local bands throughout his life, and he had a great passion for motorcycles, spending countless hours riding and enjoying the open road. Whether restoring and fixing an old car or sharing a good story, Joe was always the one to lend a helping hand, and his infectious sense of humor and larger-than-life personality made him the life of any gathering.
In his last days, Joe was well-loved and cared for by the wonderful nurses and staff at Boonespring Rehabilitation Facility, who made him feel supported and cherished. Their kindness and compassion provided him with comfort during his final moments, and his family is deeply grateful for the care he received.
Joe will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit, humor, and love will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on through the stories he shared, the music he played, and the love he so freely gave.
