The Crocodiles set sail for a reading adventure as Cleveland Elementary hosted a school-wide assembly to kick off a reading initiative.

During August, the Crocs will be teaming up to read “Adventure according to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney. Following with the book’s tale of Humphrey the Hamster and his dreams of sailing the seas, staff and students dressed like pirates.

The initiative provides every child and teacher with a copy of the book. Every class from Pre-K through 5th grade will read the book together, and families are invited to read along at home each night. There will also be incentives for answering trivia questions and completing extension activities to go along with the book.

ESOL teacher Emily Sparks coordinated the assembly.

“Our goal is to get students excited and engaged with reading, as well as to increase parent involvement,” said Sparks. “Hopefully, this will create a community of readers within our school and families.”
