Fayette ranks among top-scoring systems on 2023 Georgia Milestones

Fayette County students continue to rank among the top-performing systems in the state, with above-state-average numbers in the 2023 Georgia Milestones Assessment. Fayette County Public Schools ranked top 2 in the state in most categories among comparably-sized districts.

In 26 subject categories ranging from grades 3 through 12, the majority of Fayette students scored at the “proficient or above” level, meaning they are considered on track to being college and career ready. In only one area, 8th grade science, students scored less than 56% at proficient.

Full year end-of-course assessments looked at four main subject areas, mostly among high school students.

In American Literature & Composition, 84.6% of Fayette students scored a reading status of at grade level or above, compared to 67.4% statewide. Fayette students scored “proficient or above” at 61%, compared to 38.9% statewide. That ranks second highest in the state among districts with at least 700 test takers (Fayette tested more than 1,700 students).

In Algebra 1, 59.2% of Fayette students scored “proficient or above,” compared to 35.8% statewide. That also ranks second highest in the state among comparably-sized districts.

In Biology, 65.8% of Fayette students scored “proficient or above,” compared to 45.5% statewide. That ranks third highest among comparably-sized districts.

In US History, 59.7% of Fayette students scored “proficient or above,” compared to 37.1% statewide. That ranks best in the state among districts with at least 700 test takers.

Among end-of-grade assessments for grades 3-8, Fayette ranked in the top 2 in 17 out of 22 categories and no worse than 5th in any category among comparably-sized schools. They were best in 8 categories, including all 6 categories for 8th grade.

Fayette outpaced the state by at least 15 percentage points on all 22 categories and by at least 20 points on 16 categories.

Students began taking Georgia Milestones assessments in 2014-2015. The testing system is one comprehensive program across grades 3 through 12, which includes open-ended questions to better gauge students’ content mastery in more than 180 school systems.

Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
