The number of Covid infections in Fayette County schools has fallen to its lowest level since Halloween, according to the weekly report from the school system for the week of March 13 through March 19. The report’s low numbers approach those recorded within the first month after local schools started the academic year Aug. 17.

Only 9 students and one staff member in all 24 system schools tested positive for confirmed Covid-19 infections last week, the report said.

Among Fayette’s elementary schools, 10 of 14 are clear of Covid, the system tally showed. Fayetteville Elementary reported the single staff member among all schools with a new infection, as well as 1 student with a positive Covid test. Peachtree City, Kedron and Burch elementaries had 1 student each with confirmed cases.

Among the county’s 5 middle schools, 2 student cases were reported at Rising Starr Middle. The other 4 were all clear of new cases.

Three of the 5 high schools had 1 student each with Covid last week: McIntosh, Sandy Creek and Whitewater.

The 1 new infection among school workers represents the lowest number of new staff cases since the week of Oct. 23 through Oct. 30.

Quarantine numbers also are falling. The report says that 9 staff members and 57 students remain in quarantine after exposure to Covid during the past week for a total of 66.

Between active cases and quarantined persons, 76 students and staffers were sidelined last week, the report says.
