Part-time elementary school aide charged with statutory rape

A Jonesboro woman was arrested by Fayetteville police on Dec. 14 on charges of statutory rape involving an underage victim.

Shaniya Cotton, 19, was charged with statutory rape, according to Fayette County Jail records.

Fayetteville Police Department spokesperson Ann Marie Burdett said the charge stemmed from an ongoing relationship between Cotton and an underage child.

Burdett said the mother of the juvenile contacted police in November, with detectives subsequently conducting a forensic interview with the child.

Cotton was later interviewed and acknowledged the issue, Burdett said.

Cotton was arrested at Fayetteville Elementary School on Dec. 14, according to jail records.

Information provided by the Fayette County School System indicated that Cotton had been employed at the school since September as a part-time aide.
