Peachtree City Girl Scout Jaylen Smith is the recipient of an award for her work with an Atlanta homeless shelter for youth.

Jaylen R. Smith, a Senior Girl Scout with Troop 10101, is one of three girls awarded the Silver Award Individual Young Woman of Distinction Award by the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

As part of the 2017 Gold Awards ceremony at the Rialto Center for the Arts, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta CEO Amy Dosik and Board Chair Moanica Caston awarded Smith in recognition of her Silver Award project, The Covenant House Reading Nook.

Smith created a warm and inviting reading nook in the girls’ lounge of The Covenant House of Atlanta, a shelter for homeless youth ages 18-21 most of whom aged out of the foster care system.

Smith collected nearly 200 books from all reading levels, a rug, floor lamp, chairs and decorations for existing bookcases.

The Covenant House girls now have an encouraging space to focus on while their paper work is processed.

Smith is a ninth grader at McIntosh High School and a member of Dogwood Church.
