Polly Powell Dunson, 89, of Fayetteville, Ga. and formerly of Palmetto, Ga., died peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, March 29, 2017.
A native of Hartwell, Ga., she was born on September 3, 1927 to the late Leonard and Myra Elrod Powell. She was happily married to Willard R. Dunson until his death in February 2016. She was also preceded in death by her son, Eddie H. Dunson in February 2016.
After graduation from Hart County High School, she moved to Atlanta and soon married. After starting her family, she devoted herself full time to raising her four children. She volunteered in many capacities and was an active member of Ramah First Baptist Church of Palmetto.
Her greatest gift was that of a servant’s heart and through serving others she received her greatest joy. She was hard working, a woman of strong character, and instilled these qualities in her children. As an amazing southern cook, she was famous for her chocolate and coconut cakes, cobblers, and banana pudding. Spring was her favorite season for the beauty and new life it represented. She loved gardening, flowers, and watching things grow.
Above all, she was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her heart was full of love, kindness, and generosity to all that were blessed to know her. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol (Chuck) Martin, Paula D. McCullough and her husband Randy, and Terri Dunson; brothers, Dan Powell and Jimmy Powell; her beloved grandchildren, Tracy Young, Karrie Johns, Sandy Johns, Chaz Martin, Tannar Martin, and Barrett Martin; her great-grandchildren, Breanna Young, Keslie Young, Bennett Johns and Everett Johns.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 2, 2017, 2 p.m. at Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville with Dr. E.C. Chatham and Pastor Jeff Merritt officiating and Sandy Johns delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
