“The Freedom to Dream Big” was the theme of the 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Parade and Program held Jan. 16 in Fayetteville.

The Fayetteville MLK Day parade made its way through portions of North Glynn Street and was followed by the annual program at Sams Auditorium.

The keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Portia Shields, appointed in 2011 as interim president of Tennessee State University. The two-year contract was to have Shields achieve re-affirmation of the university’s accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
