A Nov. 14 update on the residency verification of Fayette County public school students showed 193 students still unverified.

Information provided by Student Services Director Audrey Toney at the Nov. 14 meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education showed 193 students in 135 households with their residency not verified.

It was two weeks ago that 316 students had not had their residency verified.

Superintendent Jody Barrow on Oct. 17 said the “day of reckoning” was approaching for those whose residency could not be verified.

Noting what he expressed in a cabinet meeting in late October, Barrow told board members the school system is at the point of making a decision on students whose residency cannot be verified. That date is Dec. 16, Barrow said, adding that by the end of the semester the school system is looking to potentially begin withdrawing students.

Toney and school system staff continue to attempt to verify all students whose residency is still in question.

The school board earlier in the year instructed the school system to verify residency. It is the first time since 2011 that a mandatory residency check had been conducted. Some on the board have suggested that residency checks be conducted each year.
