Read for the Record draws over 4,000 participants

Coweta County School System elementary school students heard the story “The Bear Ate Your Sandwich” on Oct. 27, during this year’s Read for the Record event.

Over 4,000 Coweta elementary students throughout the county were read Julia Sarcone-Roach’s story – a mystery involving a missing sandwich, an itinerant bear and an imaginative dog – by teachers, classroom guests and middle and high school students, said school system spokesman Dean Jackson.

Jackson said students at Smokey Road, Arnall, Lee and East Coweta Middle joined the reading celebration by partnering with elementary schools to read the story to classrooms.

Teacher Pipeline students and Future Educator club members from county high schools also visited elementary students. Arnco-Sargent Elementary School Principal Vicki Vaughn and Jefferson Parkway Principal Sean Dye were this year’s celebrity story readers, said Jackson.

“All of our elementary schools participated, and it went well. It was a lot of fun,” said Dr. Paula Baker, Coweta County School System’s Language Arts Curriculum Specialist.

Coweta County participates each year in the event, which is intended to support literacy and promote early childhood education. 

Past year’s books have included “Not Norman: A Goldfish Story”, written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Jones, and “Bunny Cakes,” by Rosemary Wells.
